The New Academy for Nature and Culture is a non-profit (501-c-3) organization, incorporated in Wisconsin.
Its mission is to provide leadership in the shaping of an environmentalism that is ecologically sound, psychologically satisfying, philosophically coherent, politically effective, positive in spirit, and friendly to the economies of humans and nature.
We do this by raising questions, proposing ideas, and bringing together the researchers, practitioners, educators, decision makers and communicators needed to explore these questions, test these ideas, and disseminate the results in effective and provocative ways.
Our current objective is to change the conversation about the environment in a fundamental way by introducing into it the ideas about values, value creation and conscience formation we have taken in large part from the work of literary critic Frederick Turner.
We are doing this through the conversation we are sponsoring in this journal/blog, and also through publications and presentations by Dr. Jordan, our collaborators, and other participants in this conversation.
We are also developing a plan for a “Values Laboratory” a project that will build on the work of Mark Stemen by setting up field experiments designed specifically to test the ideas we are exploring here through observations and experiments carried out in the context of ongoing ecological restoration projects.
